Details
Type I (1898) Crowning stamp has a thicker 1 which is closer to the bottom of the frame. Type II (1899-1905) has a slimmer 1 which is further from the bottom of the frame. The Netherlands issued a small number of these to the UPU in Bern, which passed them on to associated countries among which Portugal. These stamps where given a blue manual marker ULTRAMAR (oversea) in Portugal and colonies for tracking and to counter reuse.
