Stamps from Netherlands

Nederland

The Netherlands is a Northwestern European country on the North Sea. The Kingdom (of the) Netherlands has issued postage stamps since 1852. In 1954, the kingdom was expanded with the former colonies of Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles, which both received the status of autonomous countries within the kingdom, just like (European) Netherlands, but remained separate postal areas. When the Netherlands Antilles were dissolved in 2010, the new entity of the Caribbean Netherlands, consisting of the municipalities of Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius, was officially added to the autonomous country of the Netherlands, but the Caribbean and European Netherlands remained separate postal areas.

The first Dutch postage stamps were issued in 1852, depicting King William III.

During World War II, the Netherlands was occupied by Germany. Dutch stamp issuances were continued and a number of surcharge stamps were also issued.
The Netherlands were liberated on 5 May 1945. All previously issued stamps remained in use until a new series was introduced on 1 April 1946. This series consisted of stamps issued by the Dutch government in exile (in Great Britain in 1944) for use on ships of the Dutch Navy serving with the Allies.

Since then, stamp series with a long term have been issued on a regular basis. Also stamps for charities have become a striking feature of Dutch philately.

In 2002 a series of 12 provincial stamps were issued. Although they are not strictly local stamps (they were valid throughout the Netherlands) the stamps were only available and sold in the post offices of the respective province or in the Netherlands Philatelic Bureau.

Stamps with variable values have been issued in the Netherlands since 1989.

The Dutch Post is an enthusiastic publisher of stamp booklets. More than 150 stamp booklets have been issued since 1902.

A number of stamps have been issued since 1934 for use at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
