Lucky Luke is a humorous Belgian cowboy comic strip series, created in 1946 by Maurice De Bevere (1923-2001) under the pseudonym Morris, born in Kortrijk. The comic strip is one of the most successful European comics, together with Tintin and Asterix. More

The comic series revolves around the wandering cowboy Lucky Luke, who helps to fight injustice and crime wherever he goes. He is especially known for the fact that he shoots faster than his shadow. In the early stories, there are quite a few deaths. But later Luke only shoots weapons out of the hands of his opponents. Although he was initially a chain smoker and regular whiskey drinker, he later opted for a somewhat healthier lifestyle.
At first, women were rarely featured in the stories, but from the album 'Dalton City' (1968) onwards, 'can-can' dancers appeared in the saloons.

The other main characters are Luke's faithful horse Jolly Jumper, Rataplan, the dumbest dog in the world and the gang of crooks The Dalton Brothers, also not very smart.

Morris had conceived his cowboy Lucky Luke and his horse Jolly Jumper in the aftermath of the liberation. The cowboy-horse duo was common in B-movies at the time.

The first adventure of Lucky Luke called Arizona 1880, appeared in late 1946 in Almanac Robbedoes from publisher Dupuis. In 1947 the second story 'Dick Diggers Goudmijn' appeared on a scenario by his brother Louis De Bevere in the weekly magazine Robbedoes. From 1949 the series was published in albums. Morris chose the weekly magazine Robbedoes instead of Kuifje, because he found Robbedoes more open and imaginative.

At the insistence of Charles Dupuis, Morris and André Franquin met Joseph Gillain (Jijé) at his house in Waterloo to discuss their work. He found nothing better than to offer them lodgings in his house. Thus was formed 'The Gang of Four', as Gillain, Will, Franquin and Morris were called.

Concerned about the Cold War in Europe, Jijé decides to go to the United States with his wife and children. Morris and Franquin go with him.
The journey begins on August 3, 1948 with the “Nieuw Amsterdam” of the Holland-America Line; Rotterdam – New York.

In New York, Joseph bought a used Ford Hudson that would transport the four adults and four children from the East Coast to the West Coast. When they arrived in Los Angeles on September 2, 1948, the trio of cartoonists was surprised to learn that the center of the strip was in New York and not California. Because the group only had a three-month tourist visa for the United States, they took the train to Mexico City. Morris and Franquin would settle there, while the Gillains rented a house in Cuernavaca, a suburb south of the capital. They would stay there for a little over six months. During their stay, they continued to produce their strips and send them by mail to Europe.

At the end of this Mexican stay, in July 1949, Morris and the Gillains finally obtained a residence permit for the United States. André Franquin decided to return to Belgium, while Morris accompanied the Gillain family to New York. It was during this stay on the east coast of the United States that he met René Goscinny. Morris would later ask him to write scenarios for Lucky Luke. When their residence permit expired, the Gillains had to return to Belgium due to lack of local work in the United States, at the end of July 1950.

Morris stays in the United States, where he meets Jack Davis (1924-2016) and Harvey Kurzman (1924-2093) from Mad magazine, among others. This makes him decide to turn Lucky Luke into a comic strip.

In 1955 he returned to Belgium.

The stories did not always appear in the albums in the same order as in the weekly magazine Robbedoes/Spirou.

De verzending van de Lucky Luke-pagina’s naar Europa was duur, zodat Morris, om postzegels te sparen, een tijdje zijn platen dubbelzijdig tekende. Het gevolg was dat er één plaat niet verscheen, noch in het weekblad, noch in het album, De fotograveurs van Uitgeverij Dupuis hadden niet opgemerkt dat ook de achterkant was gebruikt. De regelmatige verschijning van Lucky Luke in het blad Pilote duurde slechts vijf jaar. Goscinny en Morris merkten op dat het publiek veranderd was en vonden dat de serie daar niet langer zijn plaats had. Lucky Luke verscheen daarom voor het laatst in 1973 in nummer 736 van Pilote met het einde van het verhaal De erfenis van Rataplan. Vanaf dat moment staat de serie in diverse stripbladen zoals Kuifje, Robbedoes waar ze een comeback maakt, en soms in Pif Gadget, maar ook in kranten als Le Nouvel Observateur en Paris Match. Intussen ontstond het tijdschrift ‘Lucky Luke’ bedacht door uitgeverij Dargaud. Het blad, verscheen in 1974 toen stripbladen een crisisperiode meemaakte en verscheen slechts voor één jaar en 12 nummers.

Lucky Productions

Toen Morris Dargaud in 1990 verliet voor Lucky Productions, maakte hij van de gelegenheid gebruik om de achterkant van de albums opnieuw te ontwerpen. Lucky Luke, die tot dan toe met een revolver in de maag van zijn schaduw schoot, schiet nu met twee wapens recht in het hart van zijn schaduw. De sigaret verdween ook en werd vervangen door een grassprietje.
