Details

Extremely rare (R4), only 3 other copies known. Only mentioned in the coin catalog of Tom Passon vd Ned. overseas areas. The seeds, worth a 1/4 duit or 1/16 stuiver, were manufactured on behalf of the VOC in the craft quarter in Batavia. The manufacture of the 'leade wicks' was leased to the shahbandars by auction. The shahbandar (Persian, literally 'harbor master') had an important, if not the most important, position in the ports and in Java was responsible, among other things, for collecting tolls on all incoming and outgoing goods.
