Details

Originally French edition (1862) with hand-colored lithographs by Doré. Quite absurdist story about (in translation) a Dutch boy who joins the French army after the French revolution and out of admiration for Napoleon, who follows and supports him in all battles. He successively loses his arm, one eye, both legs and even his head. But there is a solution for everything and he continues to fight for Napoleon to the end, who gives Jan a new silver head and keeps promoting him in rank. The book has 39 text pages and 12 pages with (sometimes several small) color illustrations. The book was also published by Gebr. Cohen, but without the illustrations.
