Details

Contax was a series of photo cameras from the Zeiss Ikon company. The Contax was produced in Dresden between 1932 and 1944. The cameras were introduced as a quality rangefinder camera. The cameras were intended as an answer to the Leica from competitor Leitz. After the Second World War, Contax and later Pentacon and Praktica cameras were built in the Dresdener Zeiss factories. The West German firm Carl Zeiss AG moved into the old Contessa Nettel factory in Stuttgart and built cameras there between 1950 and 1961. After that, the curtain seemed to have fallen, until Yashica and Zeiss started working together in 1973, which led to the "Japanese" Contax series. Yashica was taken over by Kyocera in 1983, which decided to discontinue camera production in 2005.
