5-5 R.I. 1947 - 1987 The Infantry Battalion 5-5 R.I. came under arms on 1 July 1947 in the "Westenberg barracks" in Schalkhaar near Deventer. After a short, intensive training, the entire battalion was embarked on December 17, 1947 on the troop transport ship "Zuiderkruis" for the voyage to what was then Ned. East Indies (later Indonesia). In mid-January 1948 the battalion came ashore in Semarang in Central Java. Company B was withdrawn from battalion after disembarkation and left for Cheribon. The other companies went to Salatiga and surroundings. At the end of 1948, the 2nd Police Action began and 5-5 R.I. participate in the march to Djocjakarta and further via Magelang to Temanggoeng. After returning to Djocjakarta, many other places in Central Java followed. That was the beginning of a very difficult period, especially at the outposts around Djocjakarta, such as Bantoel, Barongan, Sentolo, Kota Gedeh, Kedaton Plered, Boender, Wonosari, Gading, Post Tjot, Pyoengan and Tandjoeng Tirto. Some of these posts (notably Kota Gedeh and Kedaton Plered) were occupied by soldiers of the Ost-cie of the 5th battalion Grenadiers, which in March 1949 as 4th cie to 5-5 R.I. was transferred. After the eviction of Djocjakarta on June 29, 1949, the battalion was stationed in and around Klaten. After a "cease fire" was agreed in August 1949, the posts around Klaten had to be handed over to the Indonesians and the balalion went for some time to the area around Kudus and Japara. Then it went to Oengaran and after the transfer of sovereignty was signed on December 27, 1949, the wait for transport home began. After a train journey from Semarang to Bogor, they had to wait another 14 days and they were boarded on the MS "Nelly". Only on May 2, 1950 did the men return to the Netherlands.
