Details
OBV: Emperor's laureate, draped bust right REV: Eagle supporting wreath containing SPQR The ancient city of Caesarea Maritima, Samaria was built by Herod I, around 25-13 BCE. Built on a coast with few natural harbors, in ancient times it was considered to rival the impressive harbor at Alexandria. The harbor foundation and fortifications were severely damaged through a series of seismic activity and it became unusable as a harbor by the 6th century. Its ruins are located on the Mediterranean coast of modern-day Israel near the town of Caesaria about halfway between the cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa. It is now an Israeli National Park.
