Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil, published in the Nashville Banner, about 1967, shows an aggressive pumpkin head baring its teeth and carrying a club, representing ‘3rd party talk’, looming over a Democrat donkey and a Republican elephant as they walk along whistling their respective tunes. Although the United States has a two-party system, it is quite usual for “third parties” to stand in presidential and other elections. This makes the established parties nervous, as they both risk losing votes to such a third party. Although such independent candidates have rarely had any significant effect on the final result, at this particular moment the Republicans and Democrats were perhaps right to be nervous. In 1968 the former Democratic Governor of Alabama, George Wallace, ran for president on the American Independent Party ticket. Wallace received an impressive 13.5% of the popular vote, and 45 electoral votes in the South, although it is unlikely that he affected the final result, which was a victory for Richard Nixon. Card size 37 x 28.5 cm (14.5 x 11.25 inch), image size 34 x 25.5 cm, signed lower right. Caption in pencil in upper border, in very good condition.
