Editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon for the Birmingham News, 1970, shows an active citizen suggesting ways to cut local government costs, e.g. ‘Cut back on firemen (let every home-owner put out his own fire)’ and ‘Fire half of our police force (that would give us big savings)’ instead of introducing an occupational tax. This is a kind of employment tax payable by everyone in the state who is employed, and was introduced in Alabama (and other states) in 1970 to help pay for public services. The alternative to such a new tax, i.e. ‘tighten our belts’ and self-sufficiency, would be popular among many who resented the increasing interference of state and federal authorities in their lives. Card size 48.5 x 33 cm (19 x 13 inch), image size: 31 x 23 cm. Signed lower right and dated Friday Dec. 4 1970 in lower margin. Has been folded into four at some point, otherwise very good condition.
