Catalogue information
The great, epic poem by Marcellus Emants (1848-1923) dates from 1879. It has more than twelve hundred lines and is written in a classical meter, namely in five-footed yams. It is built up in three chants. In terms of content it is a philosophical-pessimistic commentary on the creation story of Adam and Eve. The text published here has been photographically reprinted after the second edition of 1885, completely revised by Emants. Preface to first and second editions are also included. After the text follows an introduction to the etchings, by Roelof van Rosmalen. At Lilith he made a series of 17 etchings, which were produced here lithographically, in offset. The etchings make a tough, hard, rough impression. The figures are "made of flesh and blood, I may say a lot of flesh" says the maker on p. 29.
