Original political cartoon in ink and crayon on board, published in the Daily Express, 1943, shows Hitler in the grasp of the Russian “bear”drawn in the shape of the Eastern Front between Soviet and Axis troops. Before the Battle of Stalingrad ended in defeat for Germany at the beginning of February 1943, the advance of the German armies into the Soviet Union had been halted and they were already being pushed back by Soviet forces, and during the course of the next two years relentless Soviet pressure would push those armies all the way back to Berlin and final defeat. Reproduced in “Strube’s War Cartoons 1939-1944", dated 05/01/1943). Framed and mounted for an overall size of 62 x 47.5 cm, board size 43 x 30 cm (17 x 12 inch), image size 38 x 25.5 cm, signed lower right, caption in lower border.
