Original cartoon in pen and ink/crayon on board (probably for Punch Magazine), 1949, shows a man and a young woman with a bag stuffed with cash on their way home from a day at the (horse)races, with the young racegoer explaining her winning system, i.e. pure luck. Written in pencil on verso is ‘Humorous Art, Royal Society of Arts 1949, no. 139', which refers to the Exhibition of Humorous Art held by the Royal Society of Arts in London in July and August 1949, in which the drawing was exhibit number 139. This drawing can be glimpsed briefly hanging on the wall in a 1949 British Pathe newsreel reporting on the opening of the exhibition by the then Princess Elizabeth in July 1949. Mounted for an overall size of 43 x 40 cm, card size 42 x 30.5 cm, image size 21 x 17 cm, signed lower right, caption typed on slip of paper affixed to the mount. Some staining and browning of the mount, drawing itself in very good condition.
