Original editorial cartoon in ink and crayon and craftint for Chicago Today, 1971, shows armed ‘Arabs’ and ‘Israel’ turning their backs on each other while ‘diplomats’ discuss a ‘plan to keep renewing cease-fires until they agree - if they ever do’. Following the Six-Day War in 1967, any ‘permanent pace plan’ in the middle east conflict was as far away as ever in 1971, despite the best efforts of the United Nations and the western powers. The cease-fire agreed in 1967 was constantly being violated by both sides and then renewed, and (unsuccessful) Arab-Israeli peace talks were even held in New York in September 1970. In March 1971 the Egyptian president Sadat announced that the cease-fire with Israel would not be renewed, and in October 1973 the hostility between the two sides culminated in the Yom Kippur War. Apart from Egypt and Israel eventually signing a peace treaty in March 1979, little has changed in relations between Israel and the Arab states in the region since this cartoon was published almost half a century ago. Framed and matted for an overall size of 56 x 47 cm, image size 33 x 28 cm, signed and dated lower right, caption in ink in upper border. Original text in the speech bubble replaced with text written on a pasted-on piece of card, otherwise in very good condition.
