Original pen and ink/pencil/crayon editorial cartoon drawing on art card, 1943, published in the Christian Science Monitor, shows German leader Hitler trying to sabotage the ‘Allied war stratgey’ (sic) with ‘decoy peace proposals’ and ‘squeak, squawk’ from a goose call. Some weeks before, at the beginning of December, the allied leaders had met at the Teheran Conference to discuss strategy. It was agreed that no separate peace would be made with Germany and the only acceptable end to the war would be Germany’s unconditional surrender. There were rumours around this time that some Germans sources were making false peace proposals, with the purpose of creating over-confidence among the Allies and impairing the war effort. Any such proposals would certainly not have come from Hitler or anyone in a position to put them into effect, such as the Army or the Gestapo, except as ‘decoy peace proposals’. Stamped on verso: “Used Dec 10 1943". Signed lower left, card size 38 x 28 cm, image size: 29 x 24.5 cm. Caption in blue crayon in upper border, adhesive stain over the word ‘stratgey’, otherwise in overall very good condition.
