Original editorial cartoon in pen and ink/crayon on Strathmore art card, 1973, published in the Newark Star Ledger, shows an empty jury room awaiting the arrival of the grand jury to look into ‘indictments’ against ‘Mitchell, Vesco, Sears, Stans’. Robert Vesco was a financier who was under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for embezzlement. He contributed money to the 1972 re-election campaign of president Richard Nixon and it was alleged that in return three administration officials, Mitchell, Sears and Stans would make sure that the SEC investigation into Vesco would be quashed. The three were eventually found not guilty of conspiracy charges, but the affair added to the general sense of corruption surrounding Nixon during his second term in office, which would end in his resignation in 1974 as a result of the Watergate scandal. Card size 37 x 29 cm (14.5 x 11.5 inch), image size 27 x 19.5 cm, title in ink in upper border, signed lower right, in very good condition.
