Original editorial cartoon in ink, crayon and craftint on card for Chicago’s American, 1965, shows John Lindsay, just elected mayor of New York, looking with some surprise at an endless list of ‘campaign promises’ (the Santa outfit). The verdict on whether he made good on his promises is mixed. He is described by some as the worst mayor New York ever had, but he was mayor during a very difficult period of American history and he is given credit by others for reducing racial tensions in the city when these were exploding elsewhere in the country. In 1971 he switched from the Republican party to the Democrats and even made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972. He remained mayor of New York until 1973. Card size 42 x 35 cm (16 x 14 inch), image size 37 x 31 cm, signed and dated lower left, caption in ink in upper border. In very good condition.
