Original editorial cartoon in ink and crayon on card for the Chicago’s American, 1968, shows an inner city (Chicago?) with the billowing clouds of black smoke representing ‘arson’, ‘looting’, ‘riots’, ‘violence’ and ‘sniping’. On 4 April 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King was shot while standing on the balcony of his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. His assassination sparked nationwide disturbances in Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and other cities, primarily in black urban areas. In Chicago more than 48 hours of rioting left 11 Chicago citizens dead, 48 wounded by police gunfire, 90 policemen injured, and 2,150 people arrested. Two miles of Austin on West Madison Street were left in a state of rubble. Framed and matted for an overall size of 60 x 51 cm (24 x 20 inch), image size 36 x 30 cm, signed and dated lower left, caption in ink in upper border on white correction tape which appears to be covering up an earlier title. Date stamped April 10, 1968, 1:39 PM on verso. In very good condition.
