Original editorial cartoon in ink and crayon on card for Chicago’s American, 1968, shows a Republican elephant as chef holding ‘GOP recipes’ entering a kitchen (‘USA’) which is in a complete mess. In November 1968 the Republican Richard Nixon was elected president and inherited a country in poor shape. The Vietnam War, racial tensions, political assassinations, economic recession and spiralling crime rate were some of the problems confronting the new president. Just how successful he would be during his first term as president would remain to be seen, particularly as both Houses of Congress still had Democrat majorities. Card size 42 x 33.5 cm (16.5 x 13 inch), image size 37 x 30 cm, signed and dated lower left, caption in ink in upper border. In very good condition.
