Original editorial cartoon in ink and crayon on card for Chicago Today, 1970, shows ‘Congress’ sizing up an opportunity to be a hero and stop the runaway wagon of ‘inflation’, ‘wages’ and ‘prices’. In August 1970 Congress, controlled by Democrats, passed the Economic Stabilization Act, which allowed the president, Nixon, to introduce a policy of wage and price controls in an attempt to balance the American economy, and particularly reduce inflation. Although initially not keen on the idea, Nixon eventually implemented these controls for the first time in the following year. The Act went through four phases extending into 1973, none of them ultimately successful. Card size 40.5 x 32.5 cm (16 x 13 inch), image size 36 x 30 cm, signed and dated lower left, caption in ink in upper border. In very good condition.
