Original editorial cartoon in ink and crayon on card for Chicago Today, 1970, shows Alabama Governor George Wallace announcing to an astonished ‘John Q. Public’ that ‘unless he sprouts wings, I’m gonna run’, having just painted an angelic president Richard Nixon, complete with halo, on a wall. Wallace is remembered for his segregationist attitudes during the mid-20th century period of the Civil Rights Movement, declaring in a 1963 address that he stood for "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever", and later standing in front of the entrance of the University of Alabama in an attempt to stop the enrollment of black students. He eventually renounced segregationism. He was governor of Alabama for a total of 16 years and presidential candidate for four consecutive elections between 1964 and 1976, three of these as Democrat. A 1972 assassination attempt left Wallace paralyzed, and he used a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. Card size 41 x 32.5 cm (16 x 13 inch), image size 36 x 29. 5 cm, signed and dated lower left, caption in ink in upper border. In very good condition.
