Original editorial cartoon in ink and crayon on card for the Buffalo Evening News 1961, shows Uncle Sam and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev on either side of a chasm of ‘distrust’ between ‘west’ and ‘east’. In June 1961 the Vienna (Summit) Meeting was held between President John F. Kennedy and Khrushchev. The main topic for discussion was the status of Berlin. Other topics of discussion included the conflict in Laos, disarmament and the recent Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba. The leaders were unable to resolve the most vexing questions pertaining to Berlin, and this would result a few months later in the building of the Berlin Wall. With regard to this meeting Kennedy later said of Khrushchev "He beat the hell out of me". Khrushchev came away believing he had triumphed in the summit over a weak and inexperienced leader, and this may have encouraged him to take the actions which led to the Cuba Crisis the following year. Framed and matted for an overall size of 62 x 53.5 cm (24.5 x 21 inch), image size 36 x 30 cm, signed and dated 6-15-61 lower right, caption in crayon in upper border. In excellent condition.
