Original editorial cartoon in ink on paper for the Beaver Falls News Tribune (Pa.), 1969, shows a hot and bothered president Nixon looking at ‘Nixon’s thermometer’ which is bursting as a result of the many domestic problems confronting him: ‘prices up’, ‘1968 political campaign costs’ ‘jobless rate’, ‘cost of living’ and ‘racial heat’. The economic problems were real enough, and after the race riots of 1967 and 1968 people were predicting another ‘long hot summer’ and more race riots. In fact neither materialized, the summer (of the Woodstock festival) was not a long hot one and there was only one race riot of any note. Paper size 32.5 x 27.5 cm (13 x 11 inch), image size 28 x 24.5 cm, signed lower right, caption in pencil in upper border. Has been folded in two along the width at some time so there is a light crease, otherwise in good condition.
