Original editorial cartoon on card in ink, possibly for Harper’s Weekly and/or Life magazine, 1931, shows ‘Old China’ and ‘Young China’ being herded along like cattle with nose rings by a Japanese soldier. Old China, with a ‘white’ feather seems to have control of young China, and the cartoon seems to be suggesting that the ‘whites’ (non-communists) led by Chiang Kai-shek are being steered by the Japanese to fight against the ‘reds’, Mao Zedong and the Chinese communists. The Japanese invaded Manchuria in 1931 and their advance was made easier by the reluctance of the Kuomintang government to resist the Japanese - they were more interested in trying to destroy the Chinese communists. Card size 43 x 37 cm (17 x 14.5 inch), image size 37 x 37 cm, signed lower left, in very good condition.
