Original editorial cartoon on card in ink for the Boston Post, 1939, shows a ‘motor truck’ being overtaken by a ‘joy rider’ (Whoopee, clear the way!) in a passenger car. In 1938 and 1939 road deaths in the USA fell for the first time. The suggestion here is that this may be due to improved truck safety: ‘fatal accidents down 29 percent’ and the ‘National Safety Council safe drivers award 1939'. Fatal car accidents are however ‘up 21 percent’ and some drivers are ‘asking for trouble’ and are a danger to themselves and others. Road fatalities would increase again in the years that followed. Card size 43 x 34 cm (17 x 13.5 inch), image size 35.5 x 28 cm, signed lower left, caption in pencil in upper border. Occasional soiling on borders, otherwise in very good condition.
