Original editorial cartoon on card in ink and crayon for the Springfield Leader-Press 1970, shows the large, very angry pig of ‘inflation’ chasing down John Q Public (the common man), and carrying president Nixon and the Republican elephant. Nixon is trying to control the animal (‘Whoa!’) and the elephant is carrying a sign ‘to victory in November’. The elections referred to are the mid-term elections for Congress due to be held in November 1970, two years into Nixon’s presidency. These took place against the background of the Vietnam War and rising inflation at home and did not result in ‘victory’. The Democratic Party retained its Senate majority and increased its majority in the House of Representatives. Democrats also picked up eleven states in the state governor elections. Card size 39 x 28 cm (15 x 11 inch), image size 30 x 22 cm, caption in ink in upper border, signed lower left and dated 7-8-70 bottom right. Three tack holes in both upper and lower border, otherwise in excellent condition.
