Original editorial cartoon on card in ink, crayon and water colour for the New York Daily Mirror, probably 1950, shows a small wooden ‘UN’ boat being rowed by Uncle Sam, while an ominous storm threatens in the background. At the back of the boat five members of the United Nations are totally absorbed in their debate and seemingly ignoring the hard work taking place in front of them. The storm may refer to the situation in Korea, where North Korea had invaded South Korea in June 1950. The UN voted to send military assistance to South Korea and the forces sent, while officially operating under the UN flag, consisted of about 90% US troops. So while the UN was doing the talking, it was the Americans who were doing the hard work and, it seems, not being appreciated for their efforts. A rare cartoon in colour. Card size 56 x 38 cm (22 x 15 inch), image size 45 x 30 cm, signed lower right and in very good condition.
