Original editorial cartoon on card in ink and crayon for the New York Daily Mirror, 1953, shows Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran from 1941 to 1979, sitting on one of many barrels of oil, ‘Iran Oil’. King Midas is commiserating with him. In 1953 the United States played a significant role in orchestrating the overthrow of Iran's popular Prime Minister, Mohammad Mosaddegh, who had wanted to nationalize the Iranian oil industry and shut out the immensely profitable Anglo-Persian Oil Company. During the month of August there were attempted coups and counter-coups and during the crisis the Shah was forced to flee the country. Just as all the oil in the world was not doing the Shah much good at this time, the mythical King Midas also found that his gift for turning everything he touched to gold (including his food and his daughter) did not do him much good either. Card size 56 x 38 cm (22 x 15 inch), image size 42 x 30 cm, signed lower right and stamped 25 August 1953 in upper border. In very good condition.
