Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1940, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows a rather battered Soviet leader Stalin with bandaged hand fighting Finland, which itself is joined to ‘Scandinavia’. During the ‘Winter War’ of 1939-40 Soviet troops attacked Finland. Finnish troops repelled Soviet attacks for several months, much longer than the Soviets expected. Soviet casualties were high and the situation was a source of political embarrassment to the Soviet regime. Stalin is warning Sweden, Finland’s neighbour, to stay out of the war. Sweden was in a difficult position and reluctant to enter the war as the Soviets did not appear to have designs on Sweden itself, nor would the Swedish government allow right of passage to Allied troops for fear of then being attacked by Germany. Card size 36 x 29 cm (14 x 11.5 inch), image size 30 x 26 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. Caption in pencil in upper border, paper remnants on borders, also affecting image, otherwise good condition. Another cartoon “News extra! Man bites dog!” is drawn on verso.
