Original two-panel editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1940, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows Hitler in the upper panel pointing to ‘Allies war claims’ having crossed out ‘Allies’ and made ‘All lies’ of it and saying ‘That’s the way it should be spelled - you can’t believe anything said by a man named John Bull’, and in the lower panel John Bull pointing to ‘A. Hilter war claims’ having crossed out ‘A. Hitler’ and made ‘The lair’ of it and saying ‘Don’t’ believe a thing! Just transpose the letters of his name and you know why!’. World or US public opinion looks confused by the whole business. Following the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939, both sides tried to justify their actions and influence public opinion in the United States. The overwhelming majority of Americans, even if they were isolationist, came to favour the Allied/British cause. Card size 36.5 x 29 cm (14 x 11.5 inch), image size 33 x 26 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. Caption in pencil in upper border, some paper remnants on lower border, otherwise in good condition. Another cartoon “Deflation is a critical problem too” is drawn on verso.
