Details

In 2005 and 2006 a special excavation took place in the center of Eindhoven. For a year and a half, a team of some 85 employees, made up of archaeologists, field technicians, students and volunteers, recovered the remains of more than 1,050 individuals. The remains, which date from about 1200-1850, were located inside and outside the foundations of the chancel section of the medieval Catherine Church. This church was demolished in 1860 to make way for the current and much larger neo-gothic church. For the first time in the world, a large-scale archaeological investigation using forensic techniques took DNA samples from human skeletons. It was an excavation with a medical question, among other things, that attracted a lot of public and regional, national and even international press. After years of intensive research, the results are now available to everyone. This richly illustrated publication tells more about the organization and method of the excavation, the location, the history of the church building, the foundations of the church, dating methods, the nearly 70,000 objects found, the burial ritual, the human remains, the DNA- research, the isotope research, remains of parasites, remains of animals and the research under the floor of the current church. Each of the various studies lead to fascinating insights about the former residents of Eindhoven.
