Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1950, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows a faceless Uncle Sam walking the plank while holding an empty dollar bag with the words ‘too little and too late’ on it. In January 1950 the British government recognized the new Communist government in China. The United States declined to do so, but Truman and his administration were severely criticized for not having done enough to help the former Nationalist government (KMT) with money and weapons (too little, too late) to resist the Communists. In 1949 the KMT fled to Taiwan, which was then recognized by the USA and the UN as the official government of China until the USA finally recognized the People’s Republic of China in 1979. Card size 36 x 29 cm (14 x 11.5 inch), image size 31 x 26 cm, signed lower left with nine zeros as underline. In very good condition.
