Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1938, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows a figure representing ‘old world totalitarian states’ stabbing Brazil with ‘inspired revolutionary doctrines’ In 1938, Getulio Vargas staged a coup in Brazil, abolished the constitution and, emulating the European dictatorships, made Brazil a fascist state, and thus infected not only Brazil but all of South America with the potential for political violence. He was overthrown in a military coup only in 1954. ‘Constant disclosures’ about the Vargas regime in the international press are passed off as nothing more than ‘democracy’s lies’. Card size 38 x 28 cm (15 x 11 inch), image size 31 x 26 cm, signed lower left with nine zeros as underline. Caption in pencil in upper border, in good condition.
