Alexander III of Macedonia (Greek:, Mégas Aléxandros or ', Aléxandros tritos ho Makedón), (Pella, July 21, 356 BC [1] Babylon, June 11, 323 BC [2]), better known as Alexander the Great, was king of Macedonia and at the age of 30 he was the creator of one of the greatest empires in ancient times, an empire that stretched from the Ionian Sea to the Himalayas. He was unbeaten in battle and is considered one of the most successful commanders of all time. He was born in Pella in 356 BC. Alexander was trained until the age of sixteen by the famous philosopher Aristotle. In 336 BC. he succeeded his father Philip II of Macedonia after this Philip was murdered by Pausanias. Philip had brought most of the city-states of mainland Greece under Macedonian hegemony, through the use of both military and diplomatic means.
