Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1948, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows a Soviet theatre company loading a vehicle with a number of props for a performance ‘next week’ in ‘East Berlin’. Among the props are a chest filled with ‘youth program scripts’ and ‘down with Amerika’, and a drum (‘hate’) and ‘lollipops’. This refers to the methods being used by the Soviets at this time to control and indoctrinate the states of Eastern Europe, and the Soviet sector in East Berlin. A mixture of anti-western propaganda, controlled youth organizations and indoctrination with the occasional sweetener will, together with the presence of Russian troops, keep these countries within the Soviet sphere. Card size 36.5 x 29 cm (14 x 11.5 inch), image size 31.5 x 26.5 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. In very good condition. Verso: “Brighter economic picture” Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1948, syndicated to a number of newspapers, shows a seesaw with ‘Westchester business prospects’ outweighing ‘county unemployment claims’ which are dropping. This adds up to a ‘brighter economic picture’ for the New York county of Westchester. Image size 31 x 26 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. Glue staining around borders, otherwise in good condition.
