Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, 1949, shows a young child representing 1949 carrying the message ‘A happy new year to all!’ while he and ‘the world’ focus their attention on the hammer and sickle representing the Soviet Union and its ‘unpredictable communist actions’. In 1948 the Soviets had taken control in Czechoslovakia and imposed the Berlin Blockade; it was also the year that the North Korean state was set up. A ‘happy’ new year is therefore tempered with the growing Cold War conflict and what it might bring in the new year. Card size 37 x 29 cm (14 x 11.5 inch), image size 31 x 27 cm, signed lower right with nine zeros as underline. In very good condition.
