Original editorial cartoon on card in pen, ink and crayon, published in the Dallas Morning News, 1967, shows an armed President Nasser of Egypt ordering a rather pathetic UN ‘policeman’ to leave his country. The United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) was the first peacekeeping force in United Nations history and began operating in Egypt on 12 November 1956 following the Suez Crisis. It was withdrawn ten-and-a-half years later, on 18 May 1967, at the request of the Egyptian Government, i.e. Nasser, who was an Arab nationalist and hostile to the existence of Israel. His decisions to ask for the removal of UNEF from Sinai and to block the Gulf of Aqaba to Israeli shipping are commonly accepted as the point where war with Israel became inevitable, and it was the Israelis who took the initiative and launched a surprise offensive less than a month later in what became known as the Six-Day War. Card size 37 x 28 cm (13.5 x 11 inch), image size 30 x 25 cm, signed lower right. Engraving order dated May 22, 1967 on verso. In very good condition.
