Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1942, as one of the World War Two ‘Smiling Through’ series, shows a well-dressed woman walking away from a rather nonplussed man while the neighbours look on, one of them commenting: “The old story. No further use for him now he’s losing his Basic Ration’. Up until July 1942 there had been a basic petrol ration for all private motorists. At the beginning of that month the British government withdrew the basic ration for all motorists, which meant that most car owners would not be able to use their vehicles, or not very much, so this particular gentleman has outlived his usefulness. Board size 40 x 27.5 cm (16 x 11 inch), image size 32.5 x 26 cm, signed lower centre, caption in ink in lower border and dated 2-6-42, numbered 2412. Some corner nibbles and staining around edges, otherwise in good condition.
