Portrait bust to the right within oval of Christoph Bernhard Freiherr von Galen (1606-1678). At the bottom on a stone his motto "Pie, Juste, Fortiter", surrounded by foliage. Von Galen had been bishop of Münster since 1650 and abbot of Corvey Abbey in 1663, was a well-known German warlord who invaded the Netherlands twice: in 1665 and in the year of disaster 1672. His area of power along the border stretched from the county of Zutphen to on the Dollard. Under his nickname Bommen Berend he is included in the collective memory because he besieged the cities of Groenlo, Bredevoort, Coevorden and Groningen. In his diocese he proved himself a vigorous representative of the Counter-Reformation, committed to the poor and the improvement of education. Etching and engraving by Christian Gottlieb Geyser (1742-1803), after a drawing by Franz I Michelis. Made around 1780. Signed in print.
