Original political cartoon on card in pen and ink, published in the Eastern Daily Press, 1975, shows British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his Foreign secretary James Callaghan on a Valentine’s card to Soviet leader Brezhnev. Hoping for renewed ‘détente’ and improved ‘trade relations’ between Britain and the Soviet Union, Wilson and Callaghan arrived in Moscow in February 1975 for talks with the Soviet leadership. The talks resulted in agreements on economic and industrial cooperation and other matters and a joint declaration against the proliferation of nuclear weapons. This was part of an ongoing effort by the Western European states and the USA to improve relations with the Eastern Bloc which led to the Helsinki Accords of August 1975. Card size 31 x 24 cm (12 x 9.5 inch), image size 28 x 21.5 cm, signed lower right, typed caption in lower border. In very good condition
