Original political cartoon on card in pen and ink, published in the Eastern Daily Press, 1975, shows Chancellor Denis Healey clutching his ‘budget’ briefcase and being confronted at Westminster by union leaders (Len Murray) calling for ‘more public ownership’, ‘import controls now!’, and industry leaders (CBI) (Campbell Adamson) asking for ‘a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay’ and ‘curb huge wage claims’. In his April budget Healey responded by cutting spending but mainly by raising taxes (the new leader of the Conservative party, Margaret Thatcher, described it as consisting of ‘equal shares of misery for all’). Card size 31 x 24 cm (12 x 9.5 inch), image size 29 x 22 cm, signed lower right, typed caption in lower border and date-stamped on verso 15 March 1975, the day on which the cartoonist died. According to pencil notes on verso this was ‘Lee’s last cartoon used before he died’. In very good condition.
