Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1937, as one of the ‘London Laughs’ series, shows a rather down at heel member of the upper (middle) class trying to hang on to what remains of the last shreds of his past social standing and superiority, by questioning a bemused used car salesman as to the whereabouts of the cigar lighter in the wreck of a used car he intends to purchase (note the price: £4!). Board size 50 x 32 cm (19.5 x 12.5 inch), image size 39 x 29 cm, signed lower left, typed caption pasted on in lower border and dated 7-7-37, numbered 96, minor edge staining, otherwise in very good condition.
