Details

Bust to the left of laurens Jansz. Coster (c. 1370 - 1440). Below the portrait a coat of arms and three lines in Dutch. Below that three more lines in Dutch. Coster is mentioned (exclusively in the Netherlands, and especially in his hometown Haarlem) as one of the inventors of the printing press. Etching and engraving by Jacob Houbraken (1698-1780), after the painting by Tako Hajo Jelgersma (1702-1795). Made in Amsterdam in 1764. Signed and dated in print. Most likely used as a book illustration. Source: Rijksmuseum, 2015.
