Portrait bust within oval of Professor Johannes Isacius Pontanus (1571-1639) at the age of 59. Around the oval a cartouche with the title in Latin. At the bottom 6 lines of Latin text. Pontanus was a Dutch physician, philosopher and historian. He grew up in Amsterdam and studied in Franeker and Leiden and became Doctor Philosophiae in 1593. He then worked for three years in Basel with the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and was a professor at the University of Harderwijk from 1604 until his death. He wrote historiography on Denmark, ,,Rerum Danicarum Historia'' from 1631, on Gelre, ,,Historiae Gelricae'' from 1639 (together with Arend van Sbeeldenhorst (1616-1657)), and on Amsterdam, ,,Rerum et urbis Amstelodamensium historia'' from 1611.
