Portrait bust to the right within oval of David van Hoogstraten (1658-1724). Van Hoogstraten was a Dutch doctor, poet and linguist. He studied medicine in Leiden and then worked as a doctor in Dordrecht. He was a teacher at a Latin school in Amsterdam, where he was vice principal from 1694 to 1722. As a linguist, he became best known for his glossary in which he determined the gender of nouns. He used the works of Vondel and Hooft to determine which gender should be assigned to a word. In 1704 he published a Latin-Dutch dictionary. Later in his life he started The Large General Historical, Geographic and Judicial Dictionary (10 volumes) which was completed by others after his death. Copper engraving by Pieter van Gunst (c. 1659 - 1731), after the painting by Arnold Boonen (1669-1729). Signed in print. Published by François Halma, ca. 1720. The caption is by Janus Broukhusius. Signed in print.
