Portrait bust of Jan Schouten (1786-1852), a shipbuilder, freemason and poet in Dordrecht. In 1812 Schouten was co-founder of La Flamboyante, the oldest Masonic lodge in Dordrecht. He was presiding master from 1812-1852 and deputy grand master from 1840-1852. He was also active in the political field. From 1813 he was a member of the city council of Dordrecht. A few years later he became a member of the Provincial Council of South Holland. He was a member of the Dordrecht literary society Diversa Sed Una, which was founded in 1816. He wrote several occasional works, including on the occasion of the wedding of Prince Frederik, the death of Queen Wilhelmina and the wedding of Princess Marianne.
