Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil, published in the Nashville Banner, 1948, shows a figure representing ‘dem. candidates supporting Harry’ with a large apple on his head with Truman's face which is labelled ‘Truman and his anti-south force bills’. On the left is a snarling Democratic donkey next to a Confederate flag representing ‘states rights’ and below this is a representation of the old-time southern ‘dixie’ democrat with a thin cigar, about to light the fuse of a cannon pointed at the head of Truman. In 1948 - election year - president Truman issued two Executive Orders banning segregation in the armed forces and guaranteeing fair employment practices in the civil service. Those in the Democrat party who opposed desegregation joined forces in the States Rights Party (SRP). This election was unusual in that the Democratic party was split three ways, the left backing Henry Wallace of the Progressive Party, the mainstream Democrats supporting Truman, and the right-wing Southern portion of the party backing Strom Thurmond in the States Rights Party. The SRP failed in its major objectives, to defeat President Truman's re-election bid, to ‘save’ the Democratic Party and to maintain ‘segregation forever’. This and other cartoons were featured in the Fall 1990 issue of the American Political Items Collectors' (APIC) magazine, The ‘Keynoter’. Card size 44.5 x 38 cm (17.5 x 15 inch), image size 38 x 33 cm, caption in pencil in upper border and signed lower right corner. In excellent condition.
