Portrait of Jan Beukelsz., Alias Jan van Leiden; around 1534-35 the self-crowned king of the Anabaptists at Munster. He is depicted full length, in front view, with his right hand leaning on a sword and his right foot resting on the name pad. A young servant hands him the Bible on which lies the royal crown with globe. Behind him, a lackey holds his horse by the halter. Two more moments in Jan van Leyden's history are depicted: after the army took Munster in 1535, he was captured and sentenced to death: on the left is Beukelsz. Unclothed bound to a pole where he is worked with red-hot tongs. The result can be seen in the background: Beukelsz. was put in a cage and hung as a sight on the south side of the Lambertus Church. Etching and engraving by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), after own design. Published in: Arnold Godfried. "History of churches and ricocheting from the beginning of the New Testaments to the year onses Heeren 1688", Amsterdam, Sebastiaan Petzold, 1701, part 2, p. 25. Source: Rijksmuseum, 2015.
