Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil/pen & ink, published in the New York Journal, 1956, shows a police officer on the beat spinning his bomber-shaped nightstick, representing the ‘Free nations’ and also the “vast and inevitable retaliatory force” in the shape of a nuclear bomb, while ‘red law breakers’ of various types lurk in the background. In 1956 Soviet leader Khrushchev introduced the policy of ‘peaceful coexistence’ with the capitalistic bloc, but the cartoonist evidently believes that the Communists are not sincere and the only way to deal with the Communist threat at home and abroad, and to ensure this peaceful coexistence, is from a position of strength. Card size 42 x 24 cm (17 x 9 inch), image size 33.5 x 19 cm, caption in pencil on upper border, printing instructions on lower border, signed lower right. Some slight soiling, otherwise in very good condition.
