Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil/pen & ink, published in the New York Journal, 1944, shows a cannon representing ‘closer understanding’ and ‘clearer vision’ being loaded with a shell symbolizing unity which is being fired at the ‘Axis’, i.e. the Axis powers Germany and Japan, while campaign literature is being cleared away from the ground. Drawn at the time of the presidential election of 1944, emphasises the fact that the democratic systems of the allies, or ‘our free election’, is an important weapon in the struggle against dictatorship and tyranny. Card size 36 x 29 cm (14 x 11 inch), image size 30.5 x 25.5 cm, caption in crayon on upper border, printing instructions on lower border, signed lower right. Closed tear on lower right border, some slight soiling, otherwise in very good condition.
